I want to take a moment and share with you our charge for Youth Wave for 2014. There is one scripture passage that I have not been able to get out of my heart or mind and that is Mark 10:45. “I have not come to be served, but to serve.” One of the realities of most youth groups or youth ministry in general is that it is often built on the back of the rest of the church body. Most teenagers aren’t holding down a job or contributing in resources to the mentality is that “giving” must be the job of those older people. This thinking is then transferred into “service.” While most ministries do the majority of the serving, it is often the case with youth ministry that they exist to be served. This will not be the case with us this year, or any year after.
I think most teenagers don’t know the influence that they inherently possess. I remember talking to one student about a year ago about what level of impact he could have on his fellow students. He just didn’t seem to believe that his presence or involvement would make that much of a difference. How many times have we failed to see the opportunity right in front of us?
GO is our theme this year. We have grown as a group. We have experienced continuity and consistency. We have sat under God’s word and we have continued to draw closer to Jesus. We have developed a better understanding of God’s word and we have discovered how His word is not just for some people a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, but it was written for me, and for you. We have developed lasting and healthy friendships that are built on the person of Jesus. We have been to camp, cried and laughed together. We have all dealt with struggles and hardships and we have been there for each other when we needed community the most.
Yet, we are not done. We are not done because we are still here and we have a lot of work to do. It’s time to GO!
